The 95th Major League All-Star Game is in the books, but the real story is the list of Phillies legends who never got the call. It’s a dirty secret that the organization left several future Hall of Famers off the roster while they were wearing the pinstripes. The team’s got a long history of overshadowing its own stars with flashier teammates or just plain bad timing.

The Defense That Never Got Credit

Garry Maddox stands out as the most overlooked player in this entire group. He won eight Gold Gloves during his 12-year Phillies career and anchored a defense that made five straight postseason appearances. According to MLB.com Phillies, he stole 189 bases and hit .284, including a .330 season in 1976 where he finished third in the league. Yet, he never made an All-Star team because his teammates were the ones getting all the attention. It’s a clear case of being too good at the dirty work to get the glory.

Eight Gold Gloves. And zero All-Star nods.

Clay Dalrymple faced the same problem behind the plate for seven of nine seasons from 1960 to 1968. His skills were solid, but he got passed over repeatedly. Even Johnny Moore, who ended a 10-year career hitting .329 in a Phillies uniform, got lost in the shuffle. He was in the batting race for his first three seasons but got overshadowed by Hall of Fame outfielders like Joe Medwick and Mel Ott.

Power Hitters Who Got Left Behind

The outfield and infield had plenty of missed chances too. Pat Burrell belted 251 homers over nine seasons, yet he and Pedro Feliz were the only regulars on the 2008 World Champions who weren’t All-Stars. That’s a massive stain on the record books for a championship team. Rhys Hoskins was a home-grown power bat with 20 or more home runs in five seasons before his ACL tear in 2023. Per MLB.com Phillies, he was just overshadowed by teammates during his prime years.

251 homers. No All-Star game.

Cesar Hernandez and Freddy Galvis were home-grown switch hitters who played seven seasons each. Galvis was the club’s last middle infielder to play all 162 games in 2017. Maikel Franco hit double figures in homers in five of his six seasons. These guys were the backbone of the lineup, but the All-Star selections went elsewhere. It feels like the voting process ignored the consistent work in favor of big names.

Why The Snubs Still Matter

It’s easy to look at the current All-Star roster and think the system works. But history proves that the Phillies have a habit of ignoring their own best players. Larry Christenson had a 19-6 season in 1977 that didn’t even lift him to All-Star levels. Jack Baldschun led the National League with 65 appearances as a rookie and set a club record that still stands. Gene Garber posted a 2.68 ERA in five years. None of them got the nod.

Who’s next on the chopping block?

These players did the work. They put up the numbers. They won the games. The fans remember them now, but the All-Star game left them out. That’s a shame that will never get fixed. Do you think any current Phillies player is being snubbed right now? Let us know in the comments.
