The Philadelphia Eagles are in free fall after dropping their sixth game in a row. Sunday’s 27-10 loss to the Washington Commanders at Northwest Stadium occurred. Owner Jeffrey Lurie has fired coaches after losing seasons before, and this team is heading right back to that spot.
Sirianni took the blame for the loss on Sunday. He told reporters he is focused on the players hurting in the locker room right now. “I’m not thinking about any of that stuff right now,” Sirianni said after the game, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia. He insisted he has faith in everyone, including offensive coordinator Sean Mannion. But faith does not stop a team from scoring just 17.1 points per game, their lowest total since 2012.
The Owner’s Patience Is Gone
Insiders are already whispering about a change in leadership for 2027. Eagles insider Bo Wulf told PHLY’s postgame show that the owner might be ready to pull the plug. “I don’t think Jeffrey Lurie does not want to move on from Nick Sirianni,” Wulf said, according to Heavy.com. Lurie hates being embarrassed in prime time, and the Eagles have been humiliated for two straight weeks.
The team averaged only 3.9 yards per play against Washington and committed two turnovers. Tanner McKee, the quarterback, struggled behind a porous line, throwing an interception and taking five sacks. This is the fifth different play caller Sirianni has used in five years. He admitted he must try a different approach but gave no specific details on how. “I’ve got to try a different approach and so that that 100 percent on me,” Sirianni said.
A Team That Quit
Effort is missing from this squad, and that is on the coach. The Commanders went for two with just 1:52 left in the game while leading by 15 points. The Eagles defensive line did not even try to stop Austin Ekeler from scoring. This lack of effort marks the second straight week where the team checked out early. Brandon Lee Gowton of Bleeding Green Nation wrote that the team quit for the second week in a row.
Last week, Sirianni shielded his players by stating he detected no effort problem against Dallas. This time, the film shows a clear problem that the coach must address. If the Eagles continue to lose like this, the season becomes a referendum on Sirianni’s ability to lead. He has nine games left to turn things around. The next game against the New York Giants is on Sunday, Nov. 8.
The numbers show a team that is not improving. They rank 30th in the NFL in scoring and 29th in total yards per game. Their 89 points during this six-game losing streak are the fewest in any six-game span since 2005.
