Aaron Rodgers told reporters he feels “definitely bummed out” that his final matchup against the Green Bay Packers will not take place at Lambeau Field. The 42-year-old quarterback wanted to end his career with one last stop at his old home stadium before he hangs up his cleats for good. Instead, the teams will meet this Thursday night at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh for the preseason opener.
According to NY Post Sports, Rodgers won the 2011 Super Bowl during his 18 seasons with Green Bay prior to being traded to the Jets. Behind the Steel Curtain (SBN Steelers) reports that he confirmed the 2026 season marks the end of his 22-year NFL career. The timing of this game matters deeply to him because it offers a rare chance to say goodbye properly. He noted he was “really hoping it was going to be in Green Bay for a lot of reasons”.
More Than Just a Game
The disappointment stems from lost personal rituals, not just the field location. Rodgers planned to visit his former trainer’s room and equipment staff at Lambeau before the game. He said, “It would have been strange, being in [the visitors] locker room and stuff, but I would have found my way over, like many former players have over the years and see some of the guys and see some of the trainers and equipment staff and all the people I really care about that still work there”.
He also wanted to eat dinner at Chives, a local favorite, and play nine holes at Green Bay Country Club. These small moments define the connection between a player and a city. Rodgers admitted, “When I heard it was possible to play both my former teams, I was really hoping this one was going to be in Green Bay, not just to get back at Lambeau one more time, but to head out to Chives for a dinner and maybe head out to Green Bay Country Club for a quick nine or something”.
The Steelers Connection
Last season, the Packers beat the Steelers 35-25 in Pittsburgh after Rodgers signed with the team in 2025. That game happened at Acrisure Stadium, meaning the teams have already met there recently. This year, the Packers travel north again for the preseason opener. Rodgers confirmed his stance on the location with a simple “100%, 100%” when asked if he hoped for Green Bay.
While the game is set for Pittsburgh, the emotional weight of missing Lambeau remains. The Jets never played the Packers during his two seasons there, making this matchup unique. Rodgers still holds strong ties to the organization and its people. He added, “Well, there first has to be an invite back,” when asked about future visits, noting, “We’ll see about that, but yeah, I’m always going to have such a strong tie to Green Bay and the organization”.
