The Pittsburgh Steelers hosted former Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Eli Ricks on Sunday, and the message was clear. This was not a casual look. The team needs help at a position that has been thin all preseason. Behind the Steel Curtain and other reports confirmed the Steelers also brought in two other cornerbacks, Dee Williams and Jaylon Guilbeau.
Three defensive backs in one day is not a routine workout. It shows the roster has holes that need filling before the final cuts.
Ricks Brings Special Teams Value
Eli Ricks is no mystery to scouts. The Alabama product joined the Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2023. He made the roster as a rookie and appeared in 16 games, mostly on special teams. He played in seven games in 2024 before spending time on the practice squad in 2025. Special teams reliability matters for a blue-collar defense. A player who can tackle in coverage units and contribute on the outside holds real value. Ricks also showed ball skills in college, recording five interceptions across three seasons at LSU and Alabama.
Depth at Cornerback Is Critical
Williams has been with multiple teams, including the Seahawks, Giants, and Browns. Guilbeau, a Texas product, signed with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent before being waived. The Steelers are evaluating who fits best as they head into the preseason finale.
The front office knows the final roster decisions are coming fast. They need players who can step in if a starter gets hurt or struggles. A weak secondary can undo a lot of good work up front. Bringing in Ricks, Williams, and Guilbeau shows the team is trying to address those concerns now rather than waiting.
