The Pittsburgh secondary is about to get a major upgrade. After weeks of watching a thin unit, the wait is over. Jalen Ramsey is coming back. This is the kind of talent boost the roster needs as the regular season approaches.
Ramsey Brings Elite Versatility
The depth the Steelers showed without him was solid, but it was not the same. Asante Samuel Jr. and Doneiko Slaughter have played well, yet Ramsey is a different level. Head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed the team is activating Ramsey off the PUP list. For the first time since training camp began, he is cleared to practice. Defensive coordinator Patrick Graham has said Ramsey will play a versatile “Star” role, lining up at cornerback, nickel, and safety. That kind of movement makes a defense much harder to scheme against.
Offensive Line Needs Similar Help
While the secondary is getting healthier, the offensive line still has questions. Broderick Jones struggled against the Jets, and protection has been inconsistent. There is positive news on that front too. According to reports, rookie offensive tackle Max Iheanachor is also set to return to the practice field after missing time with a neck/shoulder injury. Getting the first-round pick back into the mix is important if the Steelers want better protection moving forward.
Focus Shifts to the Final Preseason Test
The preseason is nearly finished. The Steelers play their final exhibition game Thursday against the Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium. After that, every team must cut to 53 players before Week 1. The returns of Ramsey and Iheanachor give the coaching staff more options during those decisions. The defense has looked competitive through two preseason games. Adding Ramsey only makes it stronger.
