The Pittsburgh Steelers’ defensive hopes took a hard hit before training camp even started. Two starters in the secondary will begin camp on the physically unable to perform list, per ESPN NFL NYC. This includes three-time All-Pro Jalen Ramsey, who suffered a knee injury during minicamp. It also includes second-year standout Joey Porter Jr., who aggravated his back during a mobility workout. The timing is brutal for a team trying to build chemistry early.

Khan’s Optimism Meets Reality

General Manager Omar Khan is trying to keep the mood light despite the setbacks. He stated that Ramsey did not require surgery for the knee issue. Khan anticipates Ramsey will be sidelined for “a couple weeks,” according to ESPN NFL NYC. The GM insists the veteran will be ready when the regular season kicks off. “He’s a pro,” Khan said, emphasizing Ramsey’s experience and work ethic. “This isn’t something where we anticipate him not being ready for the season,” he added. Fans will have to trust that a few weeks of rest is enough to fix a knee that sidelined a star.

Porter Jr.’s situation is different. The 2023 second-round pick has been working on a contract extension with the team. Now he sits out after tweaking his back. Khan noted that Porter was a limited participant in recent OTAs and minicamp. When asked if he had heard from Porter about his plan for camp, Khan said he did not have an update yet. “We’re just going to be smart about it,” Khan stated. The team cannot afford to rush a young corner back into contact too soon.

Young Talent Must Step Up Now

With Ramsey and Porter Jr. out, the spotlight shifts to unproven depth. Khan admitted the team feels good about its young players. “We obviously feel good about some of these young players, and we always talk about drafting, developing and extending our guys,” he said. The Steelers extended Nick Herbig and Darnell Washington earlier in the offseason. But those deals do not help the secondary right now. “And we’ll see how it goes,” Khan told reporters about the current roster. The pressure is on backups to prove they can handle the NFL speed.

The coaching staff is looking for silver linings. More frequent field opportunities for Jamel Dean are viewed as an opening by them.. “Camp’s exciting at that position just because we haven’t had a chance to get Jamel Dean on the field,” one voice in the camp said. Earlier medical clearance for Dean was described as “great news to see that he was cleared by both doctors” in reports.. Still, replacing a player like Ramsey is not easy. The defense needs everyone healthy to survive a tough schedule.

Can the Defense Survive the Start?

The Steelers have a history of overcoming injuries, but this starts ugly. Losing two corners before the first practice is a major blow. Khan says there is an interest in keeping many of these guys for a long time. “Obviously, there’s an interest in keeping a bunch of those guys here for a long time,” he noted. But talk is cheap until the pads come on. The team has a few extensions done, but the big ones are on hold. “We got a couple of those guys done, and there’s n,” Khan said, trailing off on the final deal.

Will Ramsey return in time for Week 1? Will Porter Jr. be ready to play? These questions loom large over Pittsburgh. The fans want to see the Terrible Towel wave early, but the defense might struggle at first. The team must rely on its depth and coaching. If the young players step up, the Steelers could still be a force. If they falter, the season could get rough fast. What do you think will happen with the secondary this year?
